Chapter 7: A New Wife, Old Flames

The sun hung low in the sky, casting a golden hue over the sprawling Mthembu homestead. Zanele stepped out of the car, her heart pounding as she adjusted the hem of her dress. Today was the day she would officially become the fourth wife of Sibusiso Mthembu, a man of wealth, influence, and a reputation that preceded him. She took a deep breath, smoothing her braided hair, and glanced at the large, ornate house before her. It was a symbol of everything she had ever dreamed of stability, luxury, and a life far removed from the struggles of her past. As she walked toward the house, her heels clicking against the cobblestone path, she noticed a group of people gathered near the entrance. Among them stood Sibusiso, his broad frame commanding attention, his smile warm and welcoming. Beside him were his other wives, their expressions a mix of curiosity and polite reserve. Zanele forced a smile, determined to make a good impression. She had prepared for this moment, rehearsing her greetings and gestures, but nothing could have prepared her for what came next. From the corner of her eye, she saw him Lunga. Her breath caught in her throat, and for a moment, the world seemed to stand still. He was taller now, his shoulders broader, but those eyes those piercing, familiar eyes were unmistakable. Lunga, her first love, the man who had broken her heart years ago, was standing there, staring at her with the same intensity she remembered. Her stomach churned as realisation dawned: Lunga was Sibusiso’s eldest son. The air grew thick with tension as their eyes locked. Memories flooded back stolen kisses under the moonlight, whispered promises, and the bitter betrayal that had torn them apart. Zanele quickly looked away, her cheeks burning, and focused on Sibusiso, who was now extending his hand toward her.

Sibusiso: “Welcome, Zanele, we’ve been waiting for you.”

Sibusiso said, his voice deep and reassuring.  She forced a smile and took his hand, allowing him to lead her into the house. But her mind was elsewhere, racing with questions and emotions she had long buried.

Zanele: “How could Lunga be here? Why had fate brought them together again, under such impossible circumstances?”

As the evening unfolded, Zanele tried to focus on the festivities the traditional ceremonies, the speeches, the laughter, and the music. But her gaze kept drifting toward Lunga, who seemed equally unsettled. He avoided her eyes, his jaw tight, his hands clenched into fists. It was clear that their past was far from forgotten.

Later, as the household settled into the night, Zanele found herself alone in her new room. The walls felt suffocating, the silence deafening. She sat on the edge of the bed, her mind a whirlwind of emotions. She had come here seeking a new beginning, but now the past had come crashing back, threatening to unravel everything.

A soft knock on the door startled her. She hesitated before opening it, her heart pounding. There he was Lunga, his expression a mix of anger and longing.

Lunga: “Zanele, What are you doing here?”

he said, his voice low and strained.  She swallowed hard, her voice barely a whisper.

Zanele: “I didn’t know… I didn’t know you were his son.”

Lunga stepped closer, his eyes searching hers.

Lunga: “You think that makes it okay? You’re my father’s wife now. Do you have any idea what this means?”

Tears welled up in her eyes as she shook her head.

Zanele: “I didn’t plan this, Lunga. I didn’t want this.”

For a moment, they stood there, the weight of their shared history pressing down on them. Then, without warning, Lunga reached out, his hand brushing against her cheek. The touch sent a shiver down her spine, and she knew, in that moment, that the flames of their past had never truly died. But as their unresolved feelings resurfaced, so did the danger. They were playing with fire, and the consequences could be catastrophic. In a household where loyalty and tradition were paramount, their forbidden connection could destroy everything and everyone they cared about. And so, the stage was set for a dangerous affair, one that would test the boundaries of love, loyalty, and survival.
