Chapter 41: Discovering the Truth

Marco’s heart sank as he noticed the small, almost imperceptible scar on Thando’s back. It was hidden beneath the curve of her shoulder, so faint that he had never noticed it before. But something about it felt off. His instincts kicked in, and his gaze lingered on the scar for longer than usual.

Thando: “What is it?”

Thando asked, noticing his attention on her. She turned toward him, her face still fragile from the trauma she had been through.

Marco: “I’m not sure, there’s something on your back. Let me take a closer look.”

Marco said, his voice low and tense. Thando hesitated but allowed him to examine her. His fingers traced the outline of the scar gently, and then, with a deep breath, he pushed harder. A small, metallic object beneath her skin shifted. It was almost imperceptible, but it was there a tiny, embedded tracking chip.

Thando’s blood ran cold. The realisation hit her like a freight train.

Marco: “A tracking chip, they’ve been keeping tabs on you all this time.”

Marco muttered under his breath. Thando felt the weight of the words sink deep into her bones. They were never truly free. As long as that chip remained inside her, the traffickers could find her, no matter how far they ran.

Thando: “No…, I thought I was free. I thought I had escaped.”

Thando whispered, shaking her head as the horror of the discovery washed over her. Marco’s face hardened with resolve.

Marco: “We will get it out. It’s just a matter of how.”

But the urgency in his voice wasn’t lost on Thando. The island, as remote and safe as it felt, was no longer enough to protect them. The traffickers were relentless, and now that they knew what was embedded in her, there was no time to waste.

Marco quickly began to research the best way to remove the chip, but the more he delved into it, the more he realised just how complicated the procedure would be. This wasn’t a simple job, it would require precision and care, and it could easily go wrong. He couldn’t risk exposing their location or leaving any trace that would lead them back to the island.

They spent the next few days preparing, making sure to stay out of sight. Marco grew more anxious with every passing moment. He couldn’t shake the feeling that the traffickers were closing in on them.

Thando, too, could feel the weight of the past pressing on her, despite the seeming safety of the island. Every rustle of the trees, every shift in the wind, made her jump. She kept looking over her shoulder, unable to shake the feeling of being watched.

One evening, Marco returned from a trip to the nearby cove, a troubled expression on his face. He had been scouting the area for any signs of intruders when he spotted something disturbing.

Marco: “They’re close, I saw a boat offshore this morning. It wasn’t ours, and it wasn’t anyone I know.”

he said grimly. Thando’s heart skipped a beat. The traffickers were already here.

Marco: “We don’t have much time, we need to get the chip out before they find us.”

Marco said. They knew it wasn’t going to be easy, but the situation was more urgent than ever. The island was no longer safe, and every second that ticked by put them closer to being found. They made plans to leave, but Marco knew that the only way they could truly escape was to remove the chip.

That night, after dinner, Marco prepared for the procedure. He sterilised what he could find in their small cabin, and Thando lay down on a makeshift bed of blankets, her back exposed. Marco’s hands were steady, but there was a glint of worry in his eyes. He had done surgeries before, but never something like this. Removing a chip was delicate work, and even a small mistake could cause irreparable damage.

Marco: “Are you ready?”

he asked, his voice soft as he sat beside her, his hands gently touching her back. Thando nodded, though she felt a lump in her throat.

Thando: “Do what you have to do. I trust you.”

The procedure was intense. Marco worked carefully, his movements slow and deliberate. The chip was small, but it had become lodged deep in her skin. Thando’s breath hitched as she felt the sharp pinch of the incision, but Marco reassured her with soft words.

Minutes passed like hours, but finally, with a small sigh of relief, Marco removed the chip from her back. It was tiny, but the weight of it felt immense. He stared at the small, metallic object in his hand as if it were the embodiment of all the pain and fear they had lived through.

Marco: “It’s done, you’re free now. No one can track you anymore.”

Marco said, his voice low with a mix of triumph and relief. But even as he spoke, Thando couldn’t shake the lingering fear. The chip was gone, but their fight wasn’t over.

The traffickers were still out there, and the world they had tried to escape was always just a step behind. They had one victory, but it was only a temporary one.

Thando: “Thank you, I don’t know what I’d do without you.”

Thando whispered, her voice thick with emotion. Marco leaned down, kissing her forehead.

Marco: “You don’t ever have to worry about that. We’re in this together.”

But as the night grew darker and the weight of their situation settled back in, both of them knew that they couldn’t let their guard down. Not now. Not ever. The island had been a temporary haven, but it was time to face the truth: Their past was still hunting them, and they had to be ready to run again, this time for good.
