Chapter 40: Hiding on the Island

In a desperate bid to evade their pursuers, Marco takes Thando to a secluded island in the Mediterranean. There are no signals here, no traces of their whereabouts just an isolated haven. For the first time in months, Thando feels a glimmer of peace. They spend their days in quiet routine, learning to live in secret, away from the world that once hunted her. But even on this island, the past isn’t far behind. The trauma of captivity still haunts Thando, and Marco watches over her, silently promising to keep her safe. But the calm is temporary, and the truth of their situation looms over them. Marco had meticulously chosen the island, a small dot in the vast expanse of the Mediterranean, far from prying eyes and the reach of those who hunted them. The island was uninhabited, save for a small, modest cabin near the shore, surrounded by rocky hills and dense greenery. No signal, no distractions just them, the island, and the relentless silence of the sea.

When they arrived, the exhaustion of their journey seemed to fall away from Thando's shoulders. The relentless chase, the constant fear, here they could breathe. Marco set up their temporary home, securing their surroundings and creating a sanctuary in the untouched landscape. The air was crisp, the sky an endless blue above them. For the first time in what felt like forever, Thando allowed herself to relax. Days passed in a tranquil routine. They woke up early, Marco always checking the perimeter before allowing them to go about their day. They cooked simple meals, gathering what they could from the island’s few resources fresh fruit, fish, and anything Marco could scavenge. The waves crashed gently on the shore, a constant reminder of the distance between them and the nightmare that once held her captive.

Thando found solace in the quiet. She spent her mornings walking along the beach, collecting seashells, and feeling the warmth of the sun on her face. In the evenings, she and Marco would sit by the fire outside their cabin, watching the stars appear one by one, talking in hushed voices as if not to disturb the peace they had finally found. But despite the calm, Thando knew the truth nothing was ever truly safe. The trauma of captivity never fully left her. Sometimes, in the still of the night, she would wake up in a cold sweat, the memories of the club, the men who had bid on her, the feeling of being trapped in a life she never chose, still fresh in her mind. Marco would often find her staring into the distance, her eyes haunted by something he couldn’t touch. He’d hold her close, reassuring her with his presence, but he knew there were scars that couldn’t be healed just by love alone.

Marco: “It’s okay. We’re safe here. You’re safe.”

Marco would whisper softly, his fingers brushing the back of her hand. But it didn’t always help. There were nights when Thando couldn’t sleep, her mind racing with thoughts of the past. She missed her family, her friends, the life she once knew. The quiet island, while peaceful, could not erase the years of pain and fear.

She felt a strange sense of guilt, as though her life had been stolen not only from her, but from those who had loved her. The life she now lived was filled with secrets and shadows. Every day, she wondered if it would be the last.

One evening, after dinner, Marco took her down to the edge of the water. The sun was setting, casting a warm golden light over the waves. Thando sat down on the sand, her fingers tracing the outlines of shells scattered at her feet.

Thando: “I never imagined I’d be here.”

Thando said softly, her voice barely audible over the gentle lapping of the waves. Marco sat beside her, his eyes never leaving the horizon.

Marco: “It’s not where we are, but who we’re with, we have this moment. That’s all that matters.”

he replied quietly. Thando nodded, though her heart remained heavy. She wanted to believe him, wanted to feel that peace, but the threat of what might come next was always looming.

Then one evening, Marco noticed something disturbing. As they sat in the cabin, watching the fading light outside, he felt the familiar chill run down his spine, the sensation that they were not as alone as they thought. He had always kept a watchful eye on their surroundings, but this time, the hair on the back of his neck stood on end. Something was off.

He stood and moved to the window, peering out through the slats of the wooden shutters. He scanned the area, his sharp eyes cutting through the dimming light. For a moment, he saw nothing. Just the flickering shadows cast by the moon.

But then he saw it a movement on the edge of the trees. A shadow that didn’t belong. It was faint, but it was there. His heart skipped a beat. He couldn’t be sure, but it was enough to make his blood run cold.

Marco: “Thando, stay here. Lock the door behind me.”

Marco’s voice was low, urgent. He turned quickly to her. Thando’s pulse quickened as she read the tension in his voice.

Thando: “Marco, what is it?”

He didn’t answer. Instead, he moved quickly toward the door, a quiet intensity in his movements. Thando stood, her heart racing. The calm they’d finally found was slipping away, and she could feel it, the feeling of being hunted, the knowledge that they couldn’t escape their past forever. She locked the door behind him, her hands shaking as she did so. The silence that followed felt suffocating. Thando’s mind raced, torn between trusting Marco’s instincts and the gnawing fear that no matter where they went, they would never truly be free. Outside, Marco moved cautiously, the weight of the night pressing down on him. He was prepared for anything. But as he ventured into the darkened trees, the sense of being watched never left him. Thando waited, her breath shallow, listening to the silence. Then, a distant sound reached her ears a soft rustling, the sound of footsteps on the gravel path outside the cabin. It was coming closer.
