Chapter 38: The Great Escape
Marco’s interest in Thando turns into a daring plan to rescue her. He’s been tracking the human trafficking ring for months, and now that he’s found her, he’s determined to get her out. The night is their only chance. Marco slips a drug into the drinks of the security guards and workers, incapacitating them just long enough for him to slip Thando out of the club. As the dim lights of the club fade into the distance, Thando feels a strange mixture of relief and fear. Relief because she's finally leaving, escaping the horrors that have kept her trapped for so long. But fear lingers, deep in her chest. This is just the beginning. She doesn't know where Marco is taking her, or if she’s truly safe. All she knows is that the world she once understood is gone, and there’s no turning back now. Marco’s movements are fluid, precise. He moves through the dark corridors of the club with an ease that comes from experience. He’s done this before. He doesn’t waste any time, and Thando follows him, her heart pounding in her chest. She struggles to keep up with his pace, but he’s always a step ahead, guiding her without a word.
They pass through the back door, and the cold night air hits her skin. Thando’s eyes dart around, unsure of where they’re going. Marco doesn’t hesitate. He leads her toward a black SUV parked in the shadows, its engine already running. Thando can hear the hum of the engine, the soft sound of tires on gravel, but everything else is eerily silent. The club’s noise fades behind them as they drive through narrow, deserted streets. Thando doesn’t ask questions. She doesn’t want to know. She simply holds on, her gaze fixed on the road ahead, hoping that with each passing second, she’s moving farther away from the nightmare she left behind. Finally, after what feels like an eternity, Marco pulls into a small, hidden airstrip. The hangar looms ahead like a dark silhouette against the night sky, and Thando can barely make out the shape of the private jet waiting on the tarmac. Her breath catches in her throat. The sight of the jet is surreal. It feels like something out of a dream, something she could never have imagined for herself. But it’s real. It’s happening.
Marco: “Stay close”
Marco says, his voice calm but urgent. Thando nods, her throat tight with emotion. Her feet feel heavy as they walk toward the jet. It seems like a world away from the club, from the terror that has been her reality for so long. As they board the plane, Marco moves quickly, guiding her to a seat. Thando sits down, her hands shaking as she buckles in.
Marco takes the seat next to her, his eyes scanning the room, always alert. The pilot’s voice comes over the intercom, a soft murmur as he prepares for takeoff. Thando’s eyes flick to the window, her heart racing. And then, with a soft hum, the plane begins to move.
Thando presses her face to the cool window, watching as the ground slips away beneath them. The city lights twinkle below like distant stars, and for the first time in what feels like forever, she feels a glimmer of hope.
Marco doesn’t say anything at first. He’s focused, his gaze never leaving the cockpit. But Thando can feel the weight of his presence next to her, a steady, reassuring force in the chaos of her mind.
Marco: “We’re not safe yet, this is just the first step.”
he finally says, his voice low. Thando nods silently, absorbing his words. She wants to believe that they’re free that the worst is behind her. But the reality is, she knows nothing about the people
Marco is up against. She doesn’t know what kind of danger is still lurking in the shadows, waiting for them.
Thando: “I know.”
she replies softly, her voice trembling. They fall into silence again, the only sound the hum of the jet’s engines. Thando’s thoughts race, a whirlwind of emotions. The thought of the club, the men, the trafficking ring it all seems so far away now. But she can’t let herself forget. She can’t let herself believe that this is over. The journey ahead will be long and uncertain. But for the first time in months, Thando allows herself to believe in the possibility of a future. The nightmare might not be over, but she’s finally starting to feel like she has a chance to escape it. As the plane ascends into the night sky, leaving the chaos of the club far behind, Thando leans back in her seat, closing her eyes for a brief moment. She allows herself to breathe, to relax. But deep inside, a voice whispers this is only the beginning. The road ahead will be dangerous, and the people who want her back will stop at nothing to find her. The chase has only just begun.
