Chapter 37: The Italian Stranger

Among the crowd of wealthy men, one stands out a tall, well-dressed Italian man with dark hair and a sharp, calculating gaze. His name is Marco. Unlike the others, whose eyes linger on Thando with unrestrained hunger, Marco's gaze is different. He watches her, not with lust, but with something else something she can’t quite place. There’s a flicker of concern in his expression, a tension in his stance that sets him apart from the others. But Thando knows better than to trust appearances. She is not up for auction tonight she was already sold. A long time ago. To the man who now owns her, the club owner, the king of this underground empire of flesh and desire. Here, Thando is not just another girl. She is the girl. The most desired dancer, the star attraction, the one they all pay obscene amounts of money to watch. She dances under dim red lights while men throw fortunes at her feet, men who think their wealth grants them ownership of her body, her soul.

She moves with practiced grace on the stage, her body swaying to the slow, sensual beat of the music. The club is thick with the scent of expensive cigars, whiskey, and lust. Every man in the room is mesmerised, but her mind is elsewhere. She is locked in a gilded cage, a prisoner in a life she never chose. Escape is a fantasy she no longer entertains. But then, there’s Marco. He sits at the far end of the club, watching her, unmoving. He does not leer, does not throw money at her feet like the others. He does not call out vulgar praises or demand her attention. Instead, he studies her, his expression unreadable. And that alone unsettles her more than anything else. Thando knows the type of men who frequent this club. She has learned to read them in a single glance their greed, their perversions, their insatiable hunger for control. But Marco? He is an enigma.

He leans in slightly and speaks to the club owner, his voice low. Thando cannot hear what he says, but she sees the way the owner stiffens. A slow smile spreads across his face, but his eyes remain cold. Whatever Marco has asked, it has shifted something in the atmosphere. For the rest of the night, Marco does not approach her. He does not try to buy time with her as the others do. He simply watches. And for reasons she cannot explain, that unnerves her more than anything else. As the hours pass, the club grows louder, more chaotic. Thando performs again, and again, each routine blurring into the next. But every time she lifts her gaze, Marco is there. Still watching. And for the first time in a long time, Thando feels something she thought had died long ago. Hope.
