Chapter 36: Hopeless

The silence in the villa was suffocating. Thando had spent days in the cold room, the weight of her captivity growing heavier with each passing hour. Sofia’s words echoed in her mind, offering a faint glimmer of hope amidst the crushing despair. But that hope felt distant, like a far-off star that she could never reach. Thando had tried to stay calm, to hold onto the small sliver of courage that still remained in her heart. But as the days dragged on, she grew more and more restless. The villa was locked down tight. The other women never spoke. They existed in a state of silent submission, and Thando couldn’t help but wonder if that was what awaited her too  a life without hope, trapped in a gilded cage, waiting for the day she would be sold to the highest bidder.

Then, one day, the atmosphere shifted. Sofia had disappeared. No one knew where she had gone, but her absence left a hole in Thando’s heart. She had been a small comfort in an otherwise suffocating existence, a voice of solidarity. Without her, Thando felt more alone than ever. Then, just as suddenly as Sofia vanished, something else happened. The woman in Chanel, who had been the first to bring Thando to this place, appeared at her door, her cold eyes fixed on Thando with a steely determination.

Woman:  It's time.”

the woman said simply, as if the words held no more weight than a mundane errand. Thando’s heart sank.

Thando: “Time for what?”

The woman didn’t answer, only gestured for Thando to follow her. She led her down the winding halls of the villa, each step echoing like the beat of a drum in Thando’s chest. They stopped in front of a large, ornate door. The woman knocked once, then pushed it open.

Inside, a man sat behind a desk, his face hidden in shadow. The room was dimly lit, the only light coming from the soft glow of a chandelier. He looked up as they entered, his eyes sharp and calculating.

Woman: “She’s ready.”

the woman in Chanel said, her voice unwavering. The man studied Thando for a moment, as if weighing her worth. His eyes flicked over her, making Thando feel small, exposed, and vulnerable. He didn’t say anything at first, just stared at her with a detached coldness. Finally, he spoke.

Man: “ We’ll see if she’s worth the price, prepare her.”

he said, his voice low and smooth, like velvet laced with poison. The woman in Chanel nodded and turned to leave, her heels clicking on the marble floor as she disappeared from the room. Thando stood frozen, her stomach churning. What did he mean by prepare her? Her mind raced, the sense of impending dread sinking deeper. Before she could process what was happening, two other women entered the room. They didn’t speak either, their eyes cold and unfeeling. One of them grabbed Thando by the arm and pulled her toward a small dressing room. The other woman stood silently in the corner.

Thando’s mind was reeling. She had been sold, that much was clear. But to whom? And for how much? Her thoughts were a whirlwind of panic, fear, and disbelief. This wasn’t the life she had imagined. She had been swept away into a world she didn’t understand, a world where human lives were bought and sold like commodities. As the woman led her into the dressing room, Thando’s thoughts turned to her family, to her friends, to the life she had left behind. She longed for the comfort of home, for the safety of everything she had known. But it felt like a distant dream now, one that was slipping further and further away as the minutes ticked by. She was no longer in control. She was a prisoner in a world of shadows, and the only thing she could do now was survive
