Chapter 33: Dubai Dream
The honeymoon phase didn’t last long. Just days after their wedding, Arjun announced that they were moving to Dubai.
Arjun: “It’s only temporary, my love. Business opportunities are better there, and I want us to build a future together, trust me.”
he said, cupping Thando’s face in his hands. Thando hesitated. Cape Town was her home. Leaving so soon after getting married felt abrupt, almost like running away. But Arjun was persuasive, and love had a way of making her ignore her instincts. At the airport, her mother clung to her tightly, tears streaming down her face.
Thando’s mom: “I don’t know why, but my heart is uneasy about this, if anything feels wrong, promise me you’ll come home.”
she whispered. Thando forced a smile.
Thando: “Everything will be fine, Mama. I promise.”
The first-class flight was luxurious, and their arrival in Dubai was even more extravagant. Arjun booked them a suite at the iconic Burj Al Arab, overlooking the city’s dazzling skyline. He showered her with gifts designer bags, diamond jewellery, and a private yacht tour. But beneath the glamor, Thando couldn't shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong. Arjun took calls at odd hours, always speaking in hushed tones. His mood shifted unpredictably, and he avoided answering questions about his business dealings. One evening, as they dined in a high-end restaurant, she reached for his hand.
Thando: “Arjun, is there something you’re not telling me?”
His grip on his wine glass tightened.
Arjun: “Why would you ask that?”
His smile was there, but his eyes were cold. She swallowed hard.
Thando: “I just feel like... like you’re keeping secrets.”
He chuckled, leaning in to kiss her forehead.
Arjun: “My love, you worry too much. Just enjoy our new life. Everything is perfect.”
Yet as the days passed, she realised she didn’t recognise the man she had married. And soon, she would discover the true nightmare that awaited her.
