Chapter 29: Zanele and Lunga’s Journey

Zanele stood in the center of the small apartment, her hands on her hips as she surveyed the space. It wasn’t much a single bedroom, a tiny kitchen, and a living room barely big enough for a couch but it was theirs.

Lunga: “What do you think?”

Lunga asked, his voice filled with hope as he set down a box of their belongings. Zanele turned to him and smiled.

Zanele: “It’s perfect.”

The first few weeks were a whirlwind of unpacking and settling in. Zanele and Lunga worked together to make the apartment feel like home, hanging curtains, arranging furniture, and filling the space with small touches that reflected their personalities. But the reality of their financial situation quickly set in. Lunga had secured a job through one of his former clients, but the pay was modest, and Zanele was still searching for work.

Lunga: “We’ll make it work.”

Lunga said one evening as they sat on the couch, a stack of bills on the coffee table.

Lunga: “We always do.”

Zanele nodded, though her chest was tight with worry.

Zanele: “I know. But I want to contribute too. I don’t want to rely on you for everything.”

Lunga reached out and took her hand.

Lunga: “You’re not relying on me. We’re a team, remember? We’ll figure this out together.”

Zanele began applying for jobs, but the process was frustrating. She had experience as a personal assistant, but many employers were looking for candidates with more formal qualifications. One afternoon, as she was scrolling through job listings, an idea struck her. She had always been creative, with a knack for crafting and design.

What if she started her own small business? She shared the idea with Lunga that evening over dinner. “I could make handmade crafts jewellery, home decor, things like that and sell them online,” she said, her eyes lighting up with excitement. Lunga smiled, his heart swelling with pride. “That’s a great idea. You’ve always been so talented.”

Zanele threw herself into her new venture, spending hours designing and creating her products. She set up an online store and began promoting her work on social media. The first few weeks were slow, but she refused to give up. She reached out to friends and family, asking them to share her store with their networks. Slowly but surely, orders began to trickle in. One evening, as she packaged an order for a customer, Lunga walked in and handed her a cup of tea. “Youre amazing, you know that?” he said, his voice filled with admiration. Zanele smiled, her heart swelling with gratitude. Thank you. But I couldnt do this without your support.”

As the weeks turned into months, Zaneles business began to grow. She and Lunga worked tirelessly, juggling their jobs and their dreams, but they never lost sight of what mattered most—each other. One night, as they sat on the couch, Zanele turned to Lunga. Do you ever think about the future?” Lunga nodded, his expression thoughtful. All the time. I think about us building a life together, maybe even starting a family one day.” Zaneles heart raced at the thought. I want that too. But for now, Im just grateful for what we have.” Lunga reached out and took her hand. Me too. Weve been through so much, but were still here. And thats what matters.”
