Chapter 29: The Whisper of Real Love
One Week After the First Date Kirstenbosch Gardens. The golden hour painted the slopes of Table Mountain in honeyed light as Thando walked beside Arjun through the botanical gardens. He had surprised her with a private sunset tour, the paths empty except for the whisper of leaves and the distant call of birds.
Arjun: “ Most people only see the flowers,”
he said, his fingers brushing hers as they paused beneath a canopy of ancient trees.
Arjun: “ But the magic is in the roots the things that grow unseen.”
Thando smiled, but before she could respond, his phone buzzed.
Arjun: “ Excuse me,”
he murmured, stepping away. She watched him pace near a blooming protea bush, his voice too low to hear, his free hand running through his hair in agitation. When he returned, his smile was back in place, smooth as poured caramel.
Arjun: “ Business never sleeps, but tonight, I’m all yours.”
he said, tucking the phone into his pocket. Two weeks in Dinner at the Silo Hotel. The rooftop glowed under a constellation of pendant lights, the harbour stretched below them like a spilled inkwell of stars. Arjun had ordered her favourite wine without asking, the same one she’d sipped at their first date.
Thando: “ You remembered,”
she said, surprised.
Arjun: “ I remember everything about you”
he replied, his knee pressing lightly against hers beneath the table. Then, again the vibration. His jaw tightened almost imperceptibly before he excused himself. This time, Thando strained to listen.
Arjun: “ Not now, I told you, I’ll handle it.”
Arjun hissed, his back turned. When he returned, he didn’t mention it. Instead, he fed her a bite of chocolate torte from his fork, his thumb brushing her lower lip.
Arjun: “Sweet, but not as sweet as you.”
he murmured. They stood at the lookout point, the ocean crashing below as dawn blushed the sky. Arjun had woken her at 4 AM, insisting on the perfect view. He wrapped his arms around her from behind, his chin resting on her shoulder.
Arjun: “ I could stay like this forever ”
he said. For the first time, Thando let herself believe it. Then his phone. He sighed, pulling away.
Arjun: “ One minute.”
She watched him walk toward the car, his voice sharp.
Thando: “ said no calls before eight.”
When he came back, he cupped her face.
Arjun: “ I’m sorry. Some people don’t understand boundaries.”
Thando wanted to ask. But then he kissed her, slow and deep, and the question dissolved like sea foam. Four weeks a secrete beach in Clifton.
They had the cove to themselves, the sand cool under their bare feet. Arjun traced patterns on her back as they lounged on a blanket, the sun warming their skin.
Arjun: “ You’re different," not like anyone I’ve ever met.”
he said suddenly. Thando turned to face him.
Thando: “How?”
Arjun: “ You don’t want anything from me, just me.”
he said. Her chest tightened. She did want him, his laughter, his intensity, the way he looked at her like she was the answer to a question he’d been asking his whole life. Then, the buzz. Arjun groaned, rolling away to grab his phone. This time, he didn’t leave. Just swiped to ignore the call.
Thando: “Who keeps calling?”
Thando finally asked. He hesitated.
Arjun: “A business partner. Desperate type. Doesn’t know when to quit.”
She nodded, but for the first time, the seed of doubt took root.
