Chapter 24: Buhle and Siya’s Engagement
The sun was setting over Johannesburg, casting a golden glow across the city. Buhle stood on the balcony of her apartment, a glass of wine in her hand as she watched the skyline come alive with twinkling lights. It had been a long day at work, but the view always helped her unwind. She heard the door open behind her and turned to see Siya walking in, a bouquet of flowers in his hand.
Siya: “Hey, I brought you these.”
he said, his voice warm and familiar. Buhle smiled, taking the flowers from him.
Buhle: “You’re spoiling me, you know that?”
Siya shrugged, a playful grin on his face.
Siya: “You deserve it. Besides, I have a surprise for you.”
Buhle raised an eyebrow, her curiosity piqued.
Buhle: “A surprise? What kind of surprise?”
Siya took her hand, leading her back inside.
Siya: “You’ll see. Just trust me.”
They drove to a nearby park, one that held special meaning for them. It was where they had shared their first date years ago, back when they were young and full of dreams. As they walked along the familiar path, Buhle felt a wave of nostalgia. The park was quiet, the only sound the rustling of leaves and the distant hum of the city.
Buhle: “Siya, what’s going on?”
Buhle asked, her voice tinged with both curiosity and excitement. Siya stopped walking, turning to face her.
Siya: “Do you remember the first time we came here?”
Buhle nodded, a soft smile on her lips. “
Buhle: Of course. We talked for hours. I think that was the night I realised I was falling in love with you.”
Siya’s eyes softened, his hand reaching for hers.
Siya: “That night changed my life, Buhle. And even though we’ve been through so much since then, I’ve never stopped loving you. You’re my best friend, my partner, and the person I want to spend the rest of my life with.”
Buhle’s breath caught in her throat as Siya dropped to one knee, pulling a small velvet box from his pocket. Her heart raced as he opened it, revealing a stunning diamond ring.
Siya: “Buhle Mthembu,”
Siya said, his voice steady but filled with emotion,
Siya: “will you marry me?”
Tears filled Buhle’s eyes as she looked down at Siya, her heart overflowing with love and gratitude. They had been through so much heartbreak, mistakes, and second chances but they had come out stronger on the other side. And now, here he was, asking her to be his wife.
Buhle: “Yes,”
she whispered, her voice trembling with emotion.
Buhle: “Yes, I’ll marry you.”
Siya’s face broke into a wide grin as he slipped the ring onto her finger. He stood, pulling her into a tight embrace as the park around them seemed to fade away. Buhle laughed through her tears, her heart full in a way she hadn’t felt in years.
As they pulled apart, a cheer erupted from behind them. Buhle turned to see Lerato, Zee, Thando, and a small group of their closest friends and family stepping out from the shadows, their faces beaming with excitement.
Buhle: “You guys didn’t even give me a heads-up!”
Buhle exclaimed, her voice filled with mock indignation.
Lerato grinned, holding baby Amahle in her arms.
Lerato: "We didn’t want to ruin Siya’s surprise. If we had told you, it wouldn’t have been as special.”
Zee, ever the comedian, held up a glass of champagne.
Zee: “And let’s be real, Buhle. You’ve been waiting for this moment for years. We couldn’t let you down.”
Thando stepped forward, her eyes shining with tears.
Thando: “We’re so happy for you, Buhle. You and Siya deserve this.”
Buhle laughed, wiping her tears as she looked around at the people she loved most.
Buhle: “I can’t believe this is happening. This is… this is perfect.”
As the night went on, the park was filled with laughter, music, and the clinking of glasses. Buhle and Siya danced under the stars, their hearts full and their future bright. They talked about their wedding plans, their dreams, and the life they would build together.
Buhle: “You know,”
Buhle said, leaning her head on Siya’s shoulder as they slow-danced.
Buhle: “I used to think love was complicated. But with you… it feels simple. It feels right.”
Siya smiled, pressing a kiss to her forehead.
Siya: “That’s because it is right. We’ve been through the fire, Buhle. And now we get to enjoy the warmth.”
Buhle laughed, her usual composure slipping as she looked into his eyes.
Buhle: “I love you, Siya. More than words can say.”
Siya: “I love you too,”
Siya replied, his voice steady and sure. As the night came to an end, Buhle looked out at the city skyline, her heart full. She had spent so much time building walls around her heart, protecting herself from getting hurt. But now, with Siya by her side and her friends and family surrounding her, she knew she had found her happily ever after.
