Chapter 23: The Proposal – Zee and Mandla’s

The sun was setting over Johannesburg, painting the sky in hues of orange and pink. Zee stood on the rooftop of a trendy restaurant, her heart racing as she took in the breathtaking view. Mandla had insisted on bringing her here for a “special date,” but something about the way he was acting made her suspect there was more to it.

Zee: “Okay, spill, what’s with all the secrecy? Did you win the lottery or something?”

Zee said, turning to him with a playful smirk. Mandla chuckled, his hands in his pockets as he stepped closer to her.

Mandla: “Not quite. But I do have something important to tell you.”

Zee raised an eyebrow, her curiosity piqued.

Zee: “Oh? Do tell.”

Mandla took a deep breath, his expression softening as he looked into her eyes.

Mandla: “Zee, you’ve changed my life in ways I never thought possible. You’ve made me laugh, you’ve challenged me, and you’ve shown me what it means to truly love someone. I can’t imagine my life without you.”

Zee’s playful demeanour faded, replaced by a look of surprise and emotion.

Zee: “Mandla…”

Before she could say anything else, Mandla dropped to one knee, pulling a small velvet box from his pocket. Zee’s hands flew to her mouth as he opened it, revealing a stunning diamond ring.

Mandla: “Zanele Khumalo,”

Mandla said, his voice steady but filled with emotion,

Mandla: “will you marry me?”

For a moment, Zee was speechless. Her mind raced, replaying all the moments they had shared the laughter, the challenges, the quiet nights and big dreams. And in that moment, she knew there was only one answer.

Zee: “Yes,”

she whispered, tears streaming down her face.

Zee: “Yes, of course I’ll marry you!”

Mandla’s face broke into a wide grin as he slipped the ring onto her finger. He stood, pulling her into a tight embrace as the city lights twinkled around them. Zee laughed through her tears, her heart overflowing with love and joy.

As they pulled apart, a cheer erupted from behind them. Zee turned to see Buhle, Lerato, Thando, and a small group of their closest friends and family stepping out from the shadows, their faces beaming with excitement.

Zee: “You guys!, you were in on this the whole time?”

Zee exclaimed, her voice filled with mock indignation.

Buhle grinned, holding up a glass of champagne.

Buhle: “Of course we were. Did you really think Mandla could pull this off without us?”

Lerato, holding baby Amahle in her arms, smiled warmly.

Lerato: “We’re so happy for you, Zee. You deserve this.”

Thando stepped forward, her eyes shining with tears.

Thando: “And Mandla, welcome to the family. You’ve got your hands full with this one, but I know you can handle it.”

Zee laughed, wiping her tears as she looked around at the people she loved most.

Zee: “I can’t believe this is happening. This is… this is perfect.”

As the night went on, the rooftop was filled with laughter, music, and the clinking of glasses. Zee and Mandla danced under the stars, their hearts full and their future bright. They talked about their wedding plans, their dreams, and the life they would build together.

Zee: “You know,”

Zee said, leaning her head on Mandla’s shoulder as they slow-danced, As the night came to an end, Zee looked out at the city skyline, her heart full. She had spent so much time making fun of love, of relationships, of the idea of settling down. But now, with Mandla by her side and her friends and family surrounding her, she knew she had found her happily ever after.
