Chapter 20: Lerato’s Revenge

Lerato sat in her small apartment, her hands trembling as she stared at the positive pregnancy test on the table. The joy she had initially felt was now overshadowed by anger and betrayal. Sabelo, the man she had loved and trusted, had another woman pregnant. He had lied to her, manipulated her, and now he was trying to play both sides. But Lerato wasn’t going to let him get away with it. She was done being the victim. She picked up her phone and dialled Buhle’s number. Buhle answered on the second ring, her voice calm and steady.

Buhle: “Lerato? Is everything okay?”

Lerato: “No, I need your help. Sabelo… he’s been lying to me. He has another girlfriend, and she’s pregnant too. I can’t let him get away with this, Buhle. I need to expose him.”

Lerato said, her voice shaking with emotion. There was a brief pause on the other end of the line before Buhle responded.

Buhle: “Okay. Tell me everything. We’ll figure this out together.”

The next day, Lerato met Buhle at her office. She brought all the evidence she had text messages, photos, and even a recording of a conversation where Sabelo admitted to seeing another woman. Buhle listened carefully, her legal mind already working on a strategy.

Buhle: “This is more than just a personal betrayal,”

 Buhle said, her tone serious.

Buhle: “Sabelo’s a crime lord, Lerato. If we can expose him, we’re not just getting revenge we’re taking down a dangerous man.”

Lerato nodded, her determination hardening.

Lerato: “What do we need to do?”

Buhle leaned forward, her eyes sharp.

Buhle: “First, we need to gather more evidence. We need proof of his criminal activities something that will get the police’s attention. Do you think you can get close to him again? Gain his trust?”

Lerato hesitated. The thought of being near Sabelo made her skin crawl, but she knew it was the only way.

Lerato: “I’ll do whatever it takes.”

Over the next few weeks, Lerato played the part of the devoted girlfriend. She apologised for her suspicions, telling Sabelo she had overreacted. She even suggested they move in together, a proposal that seemed to please him. Sabelo, ever the narcissist, believed he had won her back. But while Sabelo was distracted, Lerato was gathering evidence. She took photos of documents, recorded conversations, and even managed to access his phone when he was asleep. She passed everything to Buhle, who compiled it into a damning dossier. One night, Sabelo hosted a meeting at his house with some of his associates. Lerato pretended to be asleep, but she secretly recorded the entire conversation. The men discussed drug shipments, money laundering, and even a planned hit on a rival gang leader. It was the smoking gun Buhle needed.

With the evidence in hand, Buhle contacted a trusted detective she had worked with in the past. She presented the dossier, including the recording of Sabelo’s meeting. The detective’s eyes widened as he listened.

Detective: “This is big, If this checks out, we can bring down his entire operation.”

he said. Buhle nodded.

Buhle: “But we need to move fast. If Sabelo finds out we’re onto him, he’ll disappear.”

The detective agreed, and within hours, a raid was planned. Buhle and Lerato waited anxiously as the police moved in, their hearts pounding with a mix of fear and anticipation.

The raid was swift and decisive. Sabelo and his associates were caught off guard, their illegal activities laid bare. As the police led Sabelo away in handcuffs, he locked eyes with Lerato, his expression a mix of shock and fury.

 Sabelo: “You did this?”

he spat, his voice filled with venom. Lerato stood tall, her chin held high.

Lerato: “You brought this on yourself, Sabelo. You lied to me, you betrayed me, and now you’re going to pay for everything you’ve done.”

Sabelo’s face twisted with rage, but before he could say anything else, the police shoved him into the back of a squad car. Lerato watched as the car drove away, a sense of relief washing over her.

With Sabelo behind bars, Lerato felt a weight lift off her shoulders. She had taken back her power, and in doing so, she had helped bring down a dangerous criminal. But there was still one thing left to do. She turned to Buhle, her eyes filled with gratitude.

Lerato: “Thank you, I couldn’t have done this without you.”

she said, her voice choked with emotion.

Buhle smiled, placing a hand on Lerato’s shoulder.

Buhle: “You’re stronger than you think, Lerato. Don’t ever forget that.”

As they walked away from the scene, Lerato felt a sense of hope for the first time in months. She had been through hell, but she had come out the other side stronger and more determined than ever. And with Buhle by her side, she knew she could face whatever came next.
