Chapter 17: Thando’s Arrest

The knock on Thando’s door came early in the morning, just as the sun was beginning to rise. She had barely slept, her mind still reeling from the news of Mlungisi’s death and the growing suspicion that Noma was behind it. When she opened the door, she was met with the stern faces of two police officers.

Police office: “Thando Ndlovu?”

one of them asked, though it was clear they already knew who she was.

Thando: “Yes,”

she replied, her voice steady despite the knot of fear tightening in her stomach.

Police office: “You’re under arrest for the murder of Mlungisi Mkhize,”

the officer said, stepping forward to handcuff her. Thando’s heart sank.

Thando: “What? No, you’ve got this wrong! I didn’t kill him!”

But the officers weren’t interested in her protests. They read her rights and led her to the waiting police car, ignoring her pleas. As they drove to the station, Thando’s mind raced. How had this happened? She knew Noma was behind Mlungisi’s death, but how had the police been convinced that she was the killer? At the police station, Thando was placed in a cold, sterile interrogation room. The detectives laid out the evidence against her: her fingerprints were found at Mlungisi’s house, her phone records showed frequent calls and texts to him, and a witness claimed to have seen her arguing with Mlungisi on the night of his death.

Detective: “We have enough to charge you,”

one of the detectives said, his tone final.

Detective: “If you confess now, it’ll go easier on you.”

Thando shook her head, tears streaming down her face.

Thando: “I didn’t do this! I loved him. Yes, we had an affair, but I would never hurt him. You have to believe me!”

But the detectives were unmoved. They had their suspect, and they weren’t looking any further. When Buhle heard about Thando’s arrest, she immediately sprang into action. As a lawyer, she knew how the system worked, and she wasn’t about to let her friend take the fall for a crime she didn’t commit. She visited Thando at the police station, her mind already working on a defense strategy.

Buhle: “Tell me everything, don’t leave anything out.”

Buhle said, her voice calm but firm. Thando recounted the events of the past few weeks, from her affair with Mlungisi to Noma’s threats and the night of his murder. Buhle listened carefully, taking notes and asking questions. When Thando finished, Buhle leaned back in her chair, a determined look on her face.

Buhle: “Noma set you up, she’s behind this. We just need to prove it.”

she said. Buhle began digging into Noma’s life, looking for any evidence that could link her to Mlungisi’s murder. She enlisted the help of Lerato and Zee, who used their connections to gather information. Slowly, pieces of the puzzle began to fall into place. They discovered that Noma had withdrawn a large sum of money from a secret bank account just days before Mlungisi’s death.

They also found a witness who had seen Noma meeting with a known hitman in a shady part of town. And most damning of all, they uncovered a recording of Noma discussing the murder with the hitman, her voice cold and calculating.

With the evidence in hand, Buhle arranged a meeting with the lead detective on the case. She presented the recordings, the bank records, and the witness statements, laying out a clear case against Noma.

Buhle: “You’ve got the wrong person,”

Buhle said, her voice firm.

Buhle: “Thando Ndlovu is innocent. Noma Mkhize is the one you should be arresting.”

The detective was skeptical at first, but as he reviewed the evidence, his expression changed.

Detective:  “This is… compelling, We’ll need to verify it, but if this checks out, we’ll have to reopen the case.”

he admitted. Noma was arrested the following day. She tried to maintain her composure, but as the evidence against her mounted, her facade began to crack. In the end, she confessed, her voice filled with bitterness.

Noma: “He deserved it, He was going to ruin everything. I couldn’t let that happen.”

she spat. Her confession was the final nail in the coffin. Thando was released from custody, her name cleared. But the ordeal had left her shaken, a reminder of how close she had come to losing everything.
