Chapter 16: The Blackmailer’s First Move
The morning light filtered through the heavy curtains of Sibusiso’s study, casting a soft glow over the room. He sat at his mahogany desk, a cup of coffee in hand, scrolling through emails on his laptop. The house was quiet, the rest of the family still asleep, and for a moment, he allowed himself to enjoy the solitude. But that peace was shattered when his phone buzzed with an incoming message.
He glanced at the screen, expecting it to be a routine update from one of his business associates. Instead, his blood ran cold. The message was from an unknown number, but the content was anything but ordinary.
“I have something you don’t want the world to see. A little video of you and me, Sibusiso. Remember that night? If you don’t want it to go public, you’ll pay me R10 million. You have 48 hours. Don’t test me.”
Attached was a thumbnail image of the video a grainy still frame that left no doubt about its contents. Sibusiso’s heart pounded as he stared at the screen, his mind racing. Lerato. It had to be her. That night, years ago, had been a mistake, one he had tried to bury in the deepest recesses of his memory. But now, it was back to haunt him.
He dropped his phone onto the desk as if it had burned him, his hands trembling. His mind raced through the implications. If that video got out, it wouldn’t just ruin his reputation it would destroy everything he had built. His family, his businesses, his legacy all of it would crumble. And Lerato knew it.
Sibusiso leaned back in his chair, his mind working furiously. He couldn’t let this happen. He had to find a way to stop her. But how? Paying her off was out of the question. Even if he had R10 million to spare which he didn’t there was no guarantee she wouldn’t come back for more. No, he needed another solution.
As he sat there, his thoughts turned to his family. What would they think if they found out? His wives, his children they all looked up to him, trusted him. How could he face them if the truth came out? And then there was Lunga. His eldest son had already been questioning his leadership. If he found out about this, it would only fuel his resentment.
Sibusiso clenched his fists, his frustration boiling over. He had worked too hard, sacrificed too much, to let it all fall apart now. He would do whatever it took to protect his family, his legacy. Even if it meant getting his hands dirty.
But as the hours passed and the deadline loomed, Sibusiso couldn’t shake the feeling that he was losing control. Lerato had the upper hand, and she knew it. She had played her first move, and now it was his turn to respond. But one wrong step, and it could all come crashing down.
The game had begun, and the stakes were higher than ever. Sibusiso had always been a master strategist, but this time, he was playing against an opponent who knew his weaknesses all too well. And in this game, there was no room for error.
As the sun rose higher in the sky, casting long shadows across the room, Sibusiso made a silent vow. He would not let Lerato destroy him. No matter what it took, he would protect his family, his empire, and his secrets. Even if it meant crossing lines he had never crossed before. The blackmailer had made her first move. Now, it was his turn to play. And he would play to win.
