Chapter 12: vusi is arrested

Buhle sat in her car outside Vusi’s penthouse, her heart pounding against her ribs like a drum. She had promised herself she was done with him no more lies, no more secrets, no more heartbreak. But here she was, parked outside his building, staring at his name on her phone screen. His voice from their last conversation still echoed in her head, raw and pleading.

"Baby, I swear to you I'm done with this life. Done with the business. Done with everything. I just want you.” She had heard promises before, countless times, but something in his voice this time felt different. It was desperate, stripped of its usual charm, and achingly honest. And despite everything, she wanted to believe him. With a deep breath, she smoothed her dress and stepped out of the car. The night air was cool against her skin, but it did little to calm the storm inside her. Her heels clicked softly against the pavement as she walked toward the entrance, each step feeling heavier than the last.

A strange feeling crept over her, was it anxiety? Or just paranoia? She couldn’t tell. Before she could knock, the door swung open. Vusi stood there, his tall frame filling the doorway. His usually sharp, calculating eyes looked tired, shadowed by the weight of whatever he’d been carrying. But his smile that devastating smile that always made her weak was still there, soft and relieved as he looked at her.

Vusi: ”Buhle,"

he whispered, his voice thick with emotion. He pulled her into his arms before she could say a word, and she let herself melt into his embrace. His familiar scent expensive cologne mixed with something uniquely him filled her senses, and for a moment, she allowed herself to forget why she had stayed away.

Vusi: ”You came,"

he said, his voice tinged with relief as he held her tighter.

Buhle: ”I came,"

she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. He led her inside, and they sat on the plush leather couch in his living room. The city lights flickered through the wide windows, casting a soft glow over the room. Vusi took her hands in his, his grip firm but gentle, as if he were afraid she might slip away.

Vusi: "I meant what I said, I'm leaving this life. I’ve made enough money I want to do things the right way. For you. For us.”

he told her, his eyes locked on hers. Her chest tightened at his words. She searched his face for any hint of deception, for the hesitation she had seen so many times before. But all she saw was exhaustion and truth. It was the most vulnerable she had ever seen him, and it broke down the walls she had built around her heart.

Buhle: "You promise?"

she whispered, her voice trembling. He leaned closer, his forehead resting against hers.

Vusi: ”I swear on my life, Bee.”

And just like that, she let go of the doubt. She let herself believe in him, in the possibility of a future where they could be together without the shadows of his past looming over them. Later that night, she stood by the window, a glass of wine in her hand, watching the city hum below. Vusi had excused himself to take a call in his office, leaving her alone with her thoughts. The quiet of the penthouse was soothing, and for the first time in weeks, she felt a sense of peace. Then BANG! The door exploded open, shattering the calm. A flood of voices filled the room, followed by the sound of heavy boots slamming against the floor. Guns. Shouting. Chaos.

Officer: “Vusi Dlamini, you’re under arrest! Hands where we can see them!”

Buhle turned just in time to see Vusi burst out of his office, his hands already raised in surrender. His face was calm, but his eyes were frantic as they locked onto hers.

Vusi: ”Baby, stay calm,"

he muttered, his voice steady despite the chaos. Before she could move, an officer grabbed her, pushing her to the ground. She gasped, her heart hammering in her chest as the cold floor pressed against her skin.

Officer:  "Ma'am, stay where you are!"

the officer barked, his voice sharp and commanding. She watched in horror as they forced Vusi onto his knees, his hands cuffed behind his back. The officers moved with precision, their voices blending into a cacophony of orders and accusations.

Buhle: ”This isn’t happening,"

Buhle whispered to herself, her voice trembling.

Officer: “Fraud, money laundering, racketeering,”

an officer listed off as they dragged Vusi toward the door. Vusi turned his head, his eyes locking onto Buhle’s. There was no fear in his gaze, only a quiet intensity that made her chest ache.

Vusi: ”Don’t believe everything they tell you,"

he said, his voice low but firm. And then he was gone, the door slamming shut behind him. Buhle sat frozen on the cold floor, surrounded by shattered glass and broken promises. The room felt emptier than it ever had, the silence pressing down on her like a weight. She clutched her arms around herself, trying to steady her breathing, but the reality of what had just happened was too much to process. Vusi was gone. And with him, the fragile hope she had allowed herself to feel.

The officers lingered, their voices fading into the background as Buhle’s mind raced. She didn’t know what to do, where to go, or how to make sense of the chaos that had just upended her life. All she knew was that the man she loved, the man she had just begun to trust again was gone, and she was left to pick up the pieces. As the tears finally spilled over, she whispered to the empty room,

Buhle: ”What now?”

But there was no answer. Only silence.
