Chapter 11: The Edge of Danger
Buhle left her office late, the streets of Johannesburg quiet and dimly lit. As she walked to her car, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she was being watched. She glanced over her shoulder, her heart racing, but the parking lot was empty. When she got into her car and started the engine, she noticed a black SUV parked a few spaces away. As she pulled out of the lot, the SUV followed. Her hands tightened on the steering wheel as she tried to stay calm.
Buhle: “It’s just a coincidence,”
she muttered to herself. But when she took a few turns and the SUV stayed behind her, her fear grew. Buhle’s mind raced. Had Vusi found out about the private investigator? Did he know she was onto him? She couldn’t take any chances. She drove to a busy gas station and parked near the entrance, blending in with the crowd. The SUV drove past, but she didn’t relax until she was sure it was gone. As she sat in her car, her hands trembling, Buhle realised the danger she was in. Vusi wasn’t just a fraudster he was connected to dangerous people, and she had put herself in their crosshairs.
Lerato sat in her small apartment, her hands resting on her stomach as she stared at the ultrasound photo on the coffee table. She had made her decision she was keeping the baby, but Sabelo was out of her life for good. She had spent the past few days planning for her future as a single mom. She had researched daycare options, started saving money, and even looked into freelance work to supplement her income. It wasn’t going to be easy, but she was determined to make it work. When her phone buzzed with a message from Sabelo, she hesitated before opening it.
Sabelo: “Lerato, we need to talk. I miss you.”
She stared at the screen, her heart torn. Part of her wanted to believe he had changed, but the other part knew better.“
Lerato: No, I’m done.”
she whispered to herself. She blocked his number and turned her attention back to the ultrasound photo. This baby was her future, and she wasn’t going to let Sabelo ruin it.
Zee stood in the parking lot, staring at her car in shock. The windows were smashed, the tires slashed, and the words “You’re mine” were spray-painted across the hood. Her hands shook as she pulled out her phone and dialled Mandla’s number.
Mandla: “He did it again, he destroyed my car.”
she said, her voice trembling. Mandla arrived within minutes, his face grim as he surveyed the damage.
Mandla: “This is getting out of hand, Zee. We need to go to the police.”
Zee: “I already did, they said they can’t do anything without more evidence.”
Zee said, her voice breaking. Mandla took her hand, his tone firm.
Mandla: “Then we’ll get evidence. We’ll set up cameras, document everything. But you can’t keep ignoring this. He’s dangerous.”
Zee nodded, though her fear lingered. Sipho wasn’t just a nuisance he was a threat, and she wasn’t sure how much longer she could hold him off. As they drove home, Zee couldn’t shake the feeling that things were about to get worse.
Thando sat in her car, her hands gripping the steering wheel as she tried to calm her racing heart. She had just left the hospital, where Mlungisi’s wife had confronted her in the parking lot. The woman had been waiting for her, her eyes blazing with fury.
Mlungisi’s wife: “You think you can ruin my life and get away with it?”
she had shouted, pulling a gun from her purse. Thando had frozen, her mind racing as she tried to think of a way out.
Thando: “Please, I didn’t mean for any of this to happen.”
she had said, her voice shaking.
Mlungisi’s wife: “You didn’t mean to sleep with my husband?”
the woman had snapped, her finger tightening on the trigger.
Mlungisi’s wife: “You didn’t mean to destroy my family?”
Thando had backed away slowly, her hands raised.
Thando: “I’m sorry. I’ll stay away from him, I promise.”
The woman had lowered the gun, her expression cold.
Mlungisi’s wife: “You’d better. Because if I see you near him again, I won’t hesitate to pull the trigger.”
As Thando drove home, her hands still shaking, she realised the affair had taken a dark turn. Mlungisi’s wife wasn’t just angry she was dangerous, and Thando was caught in the crossfire.
