Chapter 10: The First Threat
The night had fallen quiet around the Mthembu mansion, its towering structure standing like a fortress in the dark. Inside, Sibusiso sat alone in his private office, the soft hum of the city below barely reaching his ears. His thoughts were consumed by the heated dinner earlier, the cracks in his family widening with each passing hour. Yet, something gnawed at him deeper than the rifts between his wives something much more dangerous. The empire he had spent years building, his influence, his carefully guarded wealth... it was all at risk. And for the first time, Sibusiso felt the weight of vulnerability pressing against him. The office door creaked open, and his most trusted bodyguard, Jabu, stepped inside. His face was stern, his eyes betraying the seriousness of the message he was about to deliver.
Jabu: “Boss, there’s a situation you need to see.”
Jabu said, his voice low and tense. Sibusiso straightened, his fingers drumming against the mahogany desk.
Sibusiso: “What is it now, Jabu? If this is about another one of those damned rumours”
Jabu: “It’s not a rumour, sir. It’s a warning.”
Jabu stepped forward, handing Sibusiso an envelope sealed with a dark red wax. The emblem on the wax was unfamiliar two crossed daggers with a serpent curled around them.
Sibusiso’s heart skipped a beat. A warning?
With a swift motion, he tore open the envelope, his eyes scanning the neatly written message inside. It was short, direct, and chilling.
"The Mthembu dynasty is crumbling. You can’t stop what’s coming. The walls are closing in. Your empire will fall. The first move has already been made."
The message sent a shiver down his spine, but he quickly masked his unease with a cold, calculating expression. He folded the note and set it down, his mind already working. Who would dare challenge him so openly? His connections ran deep, his influence stretched across industries and political spheres. No one could touch him.
Sibusiso: “Who’s behind this?”
Sibusiso’s voice was dangerously calm, though his hands clenched into fists on the desk.
Jabu hesitated for a moment before answering.
Jabu: “We don’t know yet, but it’s someone who has been watching you for a while. They’ve been using their resources carefully. And there’s more, sir. This came with a package a warning of another kind.”
Jabu walked over to the far corner of the room, where he had placed a small, black box on the floor. With a motion, he unlocked it and placed the contents on Sibusiso’s desk: a blood-red stone, polished smooth, with strange symbols etched into its surface.
Sibusiso stared at the stone, an unsettling feeling creeping up his spine. The symbols seemed ancient, foreign, and unmistakably ominous. It was a relic, a message from someone who knew more than they should about the inner workings of his empire.
Sibusiso: “A cursed object?”
Sibusiso mused, his voice barely above a whisper.
Jabu: “It’s more than that, this stone... it’s a symbol of power. But not the kind you want.”
Jabu replied. Sibusiso stood, his hands reaching for the stone, his fingers brushing its surface. The air seemed to grow colder around him, and for a brief moment, he felt a chill run through his bones. He had dealt with many enemies, both seen and unseen, but this felt different. There was something about this threat that cut deeper than any financial or political manoeuvre he had faced.
Sibusiso glanced back at Jabu.
Sibusiso: “Whoever is behind this... they’re playing a dangerous game. Tell the men to be ready. I want every lead investigated, every whisper in the dark tracked. This is no ordinary threat. Someone wants to destroy everything I’ve built.”
Jabu nodded sharply.
Jabu: “Understood, boss.”
But before Jabu could leave, Sibusiso’s gaze flickered to the corner of the room, where his reflection in the dark window caught his eye. He didn’t see his own face, though. Instead, a shadowy figure stood behind him its form indistinct, its presence suffocating. The figure seemed to whisper his name, a soft, sinister sound that only he could hear.
Sibusiso spun around, his heart pounding in his chest. The figure was gone, but the feeling of being watched remained.
Sibusiso: “Jabu, we need to find out who is behind this, and we need to do it quickly. This goes beyond business. This is personal.”
he said, his voice tight, Jabu’s eyes widened.
Jabu: “You think they know about the”
Sibusiso: “Yes,” they know more than they should. And if they’re willing to use this kind of message against me, they’re willing to do anything.”
Sibusiso interrupted. A long silence hung between them before Jabu spoke again.
Jabu: “We’ll take care of it. But, Sibusiso... you should be careful. People who use dark methods like this... they don’t just want your empire. They want you. And whatever this is, it’s not over.”
As Jabu left the room, Sibusiso sat back down at his desk, staring at the blood-red stone. His fingers curled around it, but the symbols seemed to burn against his skin, as if rejecting him. The game was changing. And this time, it wasn’t just about power or control.
Something darker was at play, and Sibusiso was about to find out just how far his enemies would go to bring him down. But he would fight back, no matter what it took. The Mthembu Empire wasn’t just his legacy it was his life. And no one was going to take that from him. Not without a fight.
