Chapter 55: Courtroom – The North Ridge Project
The courtroom was tense, the air thick with anticipation. Ms. Dlamini leaned over slightly, her fingers resting on the stack of files containing evidence of my direct involvement in the North Ridge project. Today, we would prove that the successes and near failures of Nkosi Construction rested on my expertise, not Sandile’s charm or Lerato’s glossy presentations.
Clerk: “Call Mr. Bongani, CFO of Nkosi Construction.”
Bongani, slightly nervous, approached the stand. Ntuli, Sandile’s lawyer, straightened his tie and rose immediately.
Mr. Ntuli: “Mr. Bongani, you were part of Nkosi Construction during the North Ridge project, correct?”
Bongani: “Yes, sir.”
Mr. Ntuli: “And the company had an official office at that time?”
Bongani: “Yes, we did.”
Mr. Ntuli: “And the project application and initial planning who handled that?”
Bongani (hesitating): “Well… the team was involved, but…”
Ms. Dlamini (cutting in sharply): “Mr. Bongani, I need clarity. When the retaining walls started showing cracks and foundations were improperly reinforced, who corrected the mistakes and saved the project from failing?”
Bongani swallowed, shifting uncomfortably. The courtroom felt suddenly smaller, the weight of the question pressing down.
Bongani: “It was… Mrs. Nomusa. She came to the site immediately, reassessed the calculations, reinforced the foundations, and redid the retaining walls. Without her, the project could have collapsed. I… I have to be honest, sir.”
A murmur ran through the court. Sandile’s posture stiffened; Ntuli’s brow furrowed.
Mr. Ntuli: “Objection! Leading the witness, Your Honor.”
Judge: “Overruled. The witness may answer truthfully.”
Ms. Dlamini (leaning in): “Mr. Bongani, did you see Lerato or Sandile take the initiative to correct those errors?”
Bongani: “No, ma’am. Lerato followed her instructions, and Sandile… he arrived later, but he didn’t intervene technically. Nomusa handled everything. She recalculated, supervised the corrections, and ensured compliance with safety standards.”
I let my eyes drift to Sandile. He avoided my gaze, shifting uncomfortably in his seat.
Ms. Dlamini: “And when the client called, concerned about the cracks, who restored their confidence in Nkosi Construction?”
Bongani: “Nomusa. She went to the site, explained the corrective measures, and had the work done immediately. The client trusted her completely.”
Ms. Dlamini turned toward the court, her tone calm but precise.
Ms. Dlamini: “Your Honor, the evidence clearly shows that while others may have been managing presentations and investor relations, the technical knowledge, oversight, and decisive action to save the North Ridge project came from Mrs. Nomusa. Without her, this development and the company’s reputation would have suffered severe losses.”
Ntuli rose quickly, trying to regain control.
Mr. Ntuli: “Mr. Bongani, are you implying that Sandile had no role in managing the project?”
Bongani (firmly): “He managed some investor meetings, yes, but the structural safety, retaining walls, foundation errors Nomusa was the one who corrected everything. She saved the project.”
Ms. Dlamini nodded at me, just slightly, a subtle acknowledgment that the courtroom was seeing the truth.
Ms. Dlamini (to the court): “Your Honor, this testimony is crucial. The North Ridge project, one of Nkosi Construction’s landmark developments, succeeded because of Mrs. Nomusa’s expertise, hands-on management, and decisive action under pressure. The record should reflect who truly held responsibility for the company’s survival when mistakes threatened its reputation and financial stability.”
I felt a quiet satisfaction as I listened. For the first time in months, the work I had done, the sleepless nights, the calculations, the hands-on supervision it was all being recognised in a court of law.
Nomusa (thinking): Let them try to claim credit. Let them rewrite the story. But today, the truth is undeniable. I built this company, and when it was on the brink of failure, I was the one who saved it.
