Chapter 4: The Ultimate Betrayal

The Golden Girls was getting restless. Bonolo had been moving funny lately. Always glued to her phone. Always typing, always smiling to herself, and suddenly not so keen to share updates. Every time the girls asked what “Themba the loser” was saying now, she brushed it off with a shrug or a quick lie. Lulu noticed first. “She’s hiding something, she said one afternoon during break, eyes narrowed behind her sunglasses. Zinhle nodded. Kea agreed. Even Amogelang, usually the chill one, paused mid-laugh and said, “She’s gone soft. Watch.” So they cornered her. Gave her a little reminder sharp-sharp. “This was a joke, babes,” Lulu said, flipping her braids over her shoulder. “A bet. Don’t catch feelings for that broke genius. He’s not one of us. You know that.” Bonolo didn’t say much. Just nodded and smiled weakly. But inside, her stomach twisted into knots.

That night, the group chat lit up. The plan was simple, brutal, and typical Golden Girls. Set up a fake romantic dinner. Make it look legit. Candlelight. Fancy spot. Tell him it’s finally time to meet face-to-face. Hype it up. Then? Show up. Not as his date, but as the audience. Bonolo tried to protest just a little but Lulu shut it down. “Nah, you started this. Now you end it. Properly.” So Bonolo went along. The invitation was sent. Carefully worded, soft and sweet, just like all the messages before. She told Themba she wanted to meet. For real this time. She told him to dress nice. That it would be a night to remember. Themba couldn’t believe it. For days, he walked around like he was floating. Practicing what he’d say, imagining her smile, wondering what she’d wear. He borrowed his uncle’s old navy blazer slightly oversized, but clean and used toothpaste to polish the scuffed tips of his school shoes. He didn’t care. He was happy. The night came. He arrived early. Too early. Sat at the table with sweaty palms, trying to calm the butterflies. The waiter brought him water. He sipped slowly, eyes on the door. Ten minutes passed.

Then twenty. Still nothing. He texted her. “Hey, I’m here. Can’t wait to see you ” No reply. Thirty minutes in, he started fidgeting. Looked around nervously. The candles flickered. His heartbeat pounded in his ears. Then, out of nowhere… laughter. Sharp. Loud. Cruel. From behind a glass partition, they stepped out Lulu, Zinhle, Kea, Amogelang… and Bonolo. All of them dressed to kill, their phones raised, recording everything. Mocking. Grinning. They had been watching him the whole time. Themba blinked, confused at first. Then it hit him like a punch to the gut. Lulu strutted up to his table, her heels clicking on the tiled floor like a warning. She leaned in and said, loud enough for the whole restaurant to hear, Shame, Themba. You really thought someone like her would fall for someone like you?” Gasps. A few awkward laughs from nearby tables. Someone clapped. One of the girls snorted. Themba froze. Time slowed. The ground beneath him felt like it was disappearing.

He turned to Bonolo, his eyes begging her please, tell me this isn’t what it looks like. But she couldn’t look at him. She just stood there, arms folded, eyes on the floor, silent. Frozen in shame. His throat tightened. His face burned. He felt the weight of every eye in the room pressing down on him. The humiliation was complete. In that moment, something shattered. It wasn’t just heartbreak. It was betrayal on a level he never thought possible. The girl who had made him feel seen, known, loved… had been lying the entire time. That night, something inside Themba died. But something else, Something darker, Was born. Because even the kindest heart can turn cold. And when someone like Themba quiet, gentle, invisible is pushed too far? They don’t break. They transform. And nothing is ever the same again.
