Chapter 3: Love in the Shadows

Themba was in deep now. Yoh, the boy was smitten for real. Every time his phone buzzed, whether it was during lunch, in the middle of class, or late at night, his heart would skip a beat. He’d pause, open his messages with shaky hands, hoping it was her. And most of the time, it was. During lessons, Themba would sit by the window, staring out, completely zoned out, thinking about their late-night chats. She had never shown him her face, but the way she spoke? The way she got him? It felt like she could see right into his soul. Every night, they talked for hours. Deep chats. Honest ones. No filters. They spoke about school pressure, about family drama, about what it’s like to not fit in when you don’t have money or name-brand clothes. She never laughed at him. Never judged.

She told him that he was smart brilliant, actually. That he had something special. That even if no one else saw it, she did. She made him feel heard. Valued. Like he mattered in a world that always made him feel invisible. For the first time ever, Themba didn’t feel alone. Even though it was all just through texts and voice notes, it felt more real than anything else in his life. To him, this was more than just a crush. It was love. But what Themba didn’t know was that on the other side of those messages, something was changing. Fast. Bonolo, the one who started the whole thing as a joke, had changed. At first, it was just laughs with the girls. A dare. A little spice to keep the group entertained. They created the fake profile together and sent those first few messages just to mess with him. But now? Bonolo was the only one replying. She started looking forward to hearing from him. When he sent a voice note, she’d play it over and over again smiling, heart racing, cheeks warm.

The girls noticed she was quieter about the whole thing, but Bonolo brushed them off. She stopped showing them every chat. Sometimes, she even deleted the voice notes before the others could hear them, scared they’d see how much she actually cared. She told herself it was still a game. Just fun. Nothing serious. But her heart wasn’t buying it anymore. She was falling for him. For real. For the way he saw the world. For his honesty. For how he never once spoke to her like she was just a pretty face or a rich girl. And she knew, deep down, that he was falling for her too even though he didn’t know who she really was. Bonolo who had spent so long surrounded by fake smiles, fake friendships, and shallow vibes was finally feeling something real. And it scared her. Themba had no idea that the girl he was catching feelings for was part of the very group that had made his life hell. And Bonolo? She was trapped. Between what she was supposed to be doing, and what her heart now wanted. But secrets don’t stay hidden forever. And when this one comes out… Eish. It’s going to leave someone really hurt.
