Chapter 12: Honeymoon in Mauritius
Sandile spared no effort for our honeymoon. Within days of the wedding, we were on a plane to Mauritius the first time either of us had ever left the country. The air was warm and salty when we landed, carrying the faint scent of the ocean and something wild and new. The ocean stretched endlessly before us, a brilliant blue that seemed to shimmer just for us, like it had been painted by the sun itself.
The resort was nothing short of paradise. Palm trees swayed in the breeze, casting playful shadows across the white sand that was soft beneath our feet. The gentle murmur of waves broke the silence, whispering promises and secrets as we wandered along the shore. For the first time in months, there were no business worries, no family expectations, no neighbours peering in or judging our every move. It was just the two of us, a world condensed to the size of our shared laughter and whispered conversations.
That first night, we sat on the balcony, watching the sun sink into the sea. The sky blazed in hues of orange and pink, reflecting in the calm water like fire caught in glass. Sandile reached for my hand, and his touch was gentle, deliberate, full of a tenderness that seemed to quiet everything else. I could feel the pulse of his warmth beneath my palm and finally found the courage to speak words I had held in for years.
Nomusa: ”Ngizokutshela iqiniso, Sandile. To be honest, when I told you, a part of me was waiting for you to leave too, just like all the others. I didn't believe you would stay."
Sandile: ”Those other men? They left because they were blind. They couldn't see that the best things in life are worth waiting for. And you... you were worth everything."
Later, in the quiet of our room, we shared ourselves for the very first time. Every touch, every kiss, felt like an exploration. It was awkward in the way first love always is, but also beautiful shy, tender, and yet passionate. Laughter tumbled between us like a secret melody, whispers carried promises that only we understood, and every brush of skin sent shivers down my spine. For me, it was unforgettable. For him, I could see in the way he looked at me that it was everything he had ever dreamed of, the culmination of patience, trust, and love.
The days that followed were filled with wonder and delight. We rode small boats across the turquoise waters, the sea glinting like scattered diamonds beneath the sun. We sampled exotic foods that made us laugh at our own mispronunciations and held each other close, the world shrinking to the curve of our arms and the press of our hands. Every evening, we walked along the beach, our footprints left behind only to be erased by the tide, a reminder that some moments are fleeting but unforgettable.
And yet, nothing no laughter, no sunsets, no whispered secrets compared to that night of passion. That night, I realised that love, when rooted in respect, patience, and understanding, becomes the kind of memory no storm could ever wash away. It was ours alone, a perfect mix of fire and tenderness, of longing finally fulfilled.
Mauritius gave us a world apart from everything we knew, a place where love could breathe freely. And in that world, for that week, we belonged entirely to each other, carrying the promise of all the dreams we had dared to whisper under the stars.
